Track Profile: Sunset Speedway

An hour north of Toronto, Ontario sits Sunset Speedway, a 1/3-mile oval track that has quickly become a fan favourite on the NASCAR Pinty’s Series schedule.

Many Ontario drivers grew up racing at Sunset, including D.J. Kennington, Cayden and Treyten Lapcevich and Brandon Watson.

The Pinty’s Series first visited the track in 2015 and most recently held doubleheaders in 2020 and 2021.

TRACK PROFILE: SUNSET SPEEDWAY

Sunset Speedway originally opened its doors in 1968 and saw new ownership come in and begin restoring the facility in May 2009.

After replacing the track surface, repairing the grandstands, and adding a pit road, the track hosted the Pinty’s Series for the first time in 2015, serving as a replacement to Barrie Speedway on the schedule. Sunset also began hosting NASCAR Advanced Auto Parts Weekly Series races.

Alex Tagliani won the inaugural race at the track and followed with a repeat win in 2016.

The track did not appear on the Pinty’s Series schedule from 2017 to 19 but continued to host the NASCAR Weekly Series and a variety of other Ontario races.

In 2020, fans were overjoyed to see the track make its return to the Pinty’s calendar.

However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the original schedule was abbreviated into the Pinty’s FanCave Challenge.  And while the shortened season started with a doubleheader at Sunset, fans were unable to watch grandstands due to public health restrictions.

L.P. Dumoulin won the first race that day, narrowly avoiding a last-lap accident while Jason Hathaway claimed the second.

One year later fans were welcomed back for the 2021 season kickoff. Quebec superstar Raphael Lessard swept both 125 lap races filling in for an injured Donald Theetge.
