Qualifying for the NASCAR Canada Series WeatherTech 200 at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park took place across three groups on Saturday afternoon, with Kyle Steckly emerging fastest overall to claim the E3 Spark Plugs Pole Award.
Group 1 saw limited green-flag running after Geoff Johnson spun the No. 14 Johnson Forest Products/King City Forwarding Ford, bringing out a full-course yellow. The session returned to green with only a few minutes remaining, giving drivers limited opportunities to set a competitive lap. Matthew Scannell emerged fastest in the group with a lap time of 1:25.008 behind the No. 99 Main Street Logistics/Sierra Storage Dodge.
In Group 2, Sam Fellows in the No. 87 AER/Novus/McDougall Energy/Mobil 1 Chevrolet moved to the top of the timesheets, posting a 1:24.412 lap to take over the fastest time overall heading into the final group.
The pace picked up in Group 3 and ultimately Kyle Steckly delivered the fastest lap of the session with the No. 22 Sierra Excavating/APC/Murphy Mtps/MBS Chevrolet. Steckly posted a 1:22.996 to secure the pole position for the WeatherTech 200.
“I’m really proud. This is our second pole here with the MBS Motorsports guys, but we’re still looking for our first win,” said Steckly. “The pole is great, and track position is really important. We wanted to qualify inside the top five, so I’m happy we were able to do that. We have a really good car, and now we just need to keep it up front, play the strategy right and put ourselves in a position to be there at the end tomorrow.”
Kyle Steckly will lead the field to green for the WeatherTech 200, with Tyler Gonzalez starting second in the No. 38 RGR Motorsports/Muskoka Aircraft Refinishing Ford, Alex Tagliani third behind the No. 80 St. Hubert/Bet GRW/UPS Store/Olymel Chevrolet, Gary Klutt fourth behind the No. 71 AutologiQ/Kleen-Flo Dodge and Connor Bell rounding out the top five in the No. 3 Dymon/Sangsin Brake/HGC/Fast Eddie Chevrolet.
