Track Profile: Edmonton International Raceway

Located on the outskirts of Wetaskiwin, Alberta sits a small 1/4-mile asphalt oval named Edmonton International Raceway.

With tight corners and short straightaways, this little bullring is always a spectacle when the NASCAR Pinty’s Series comes to visit.

Edmonton Int’l Raceway originally opened under the name Sunset Speedway in 1967, as a dirt oval.

In 1994 the track was paved and one year later Ron and Loretta Thiering took over the track and have been running it’s operations every since.

In 2005 the track joined the NASCAR Weekly Touring Series, becoming the first track in Alberta to be sanctioned by NASCAR. Then the name was also officially changed to Edmonton International Raceway.

In 2014, the Pinty’s Series made its debut at the track, after the Edmonton Indy closed for good, bring NASCAR racing back to the province after a year without.

Andrew Ranger won the inaugural race at the track while Alex Tagliani set a qualifying record, that has still yet to be broken.

The series continued the trip west for the next five seasons, brings a slue of different winners, including Scott Steckly, Alex Labbe, L.P. Dumoulin and Tagliani.

Edmonton was originally featured on the 2020 schedule, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic was postponed for the following two seasons.

Fans were ecstatic when the 2022 schedule featured a return to the iconic track and were treated to a stellar battle between Kevin Lacroix and Marc-Antoine Camirand over 300 laps. At the checkered flag, it was the No. 96 GM Paillé Chevrolet of Camirand who won in NASCAR Overtime.
