Track Profile: Canadian Tire Motorsport Park

One of the most historic and well know racing venues in Ontario, Canada is Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. The 2.459-mile road course, 30-minutes north of Bowmanville has played host to some of the most iconic finishes in NASCAR history.

The Grand Prix Circuit at CTMP has hosted 24 races over 16 years, eight more that the next closest track and has celebrated nine different winners.

The Pinty’s Series first visited the track during it’s inaugural season and most recently held double-header events in 2021

TRACK PROFILE: CANADIAN TIRE MOTORSPORT PARK

Canadian Tire Motorsport Park originally opened its doors in 1961, under the name Mosport Park.

The track held the first Formula One Canadian Grand Prix in 1967 and the series raced there on and off over ten years, for a total of eight races on ten-turn circuit.

Andrew Ranger won the NASCAR Pinty’s Series’ first race at CTMP and went on to win two more times there. Kevin Lacroix is the most successful driver on the track, picking up a total of five wins and eighth top-fives over six years.

From 2007 to 2013, CTMP also housed an oval track on the park grounds. The half-mile oval was a staple on the series schedule for seven seasons until it was announced the track would be demolished to make way for a new driver development track.

In 2013, the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series made the trip north of the border for it’s debut race in Canada, won by Chase Elliott. Over seven races at the track, the series brought a number of intense battles and iconic finishes to CTMP, including in 2016 when John Hunter Nemechek and Cole Custer wreck coming across the start finish line.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Truck Series has been unable to make a return to the track and even the Pinty’s Series was unable to race there in 2020.

In 2021, the series returned to the track for two races over the Labour Day Weekend. First was a 30-lap sprint race in which L.P. Dumoulin captured his only win of the year. The Sunday saw the traditional 51-lap race where Marc-Antoine Camirand passed teammate Alex Tagliani with five-laps to go, taking home his second series win and a first road course win for the No. 22 car.

Last year, the series went back to its traditional schedule, visiting the track on the Victoria Day and Labour Day long-weekends, respectively. The first race at CTMP saw Lacroix return to victory lane after bumping Gary Klutt for the win, while the second race saw Lacroix and Camirand pass the lead back and forth until the No. 96 was the one to cross the finish line, effectively clinching his 2022 Championship title.
